The Whispering Vault is a horror-themed roleplaying game originally published in 1993. Players take on the role of “Stalkers,” persons who have risen above their own mortality to act as servants of the guardians of Reality, tracking down and apprehending rogue gods who have invaded Reality and returning them to the realm of the Unseen where they are cast into The Whispering Vault.

At the end of all reality lies the Whispering Vault, the place that mad gods go to be punished; you escort them to the gates of the vault.

Again We hear the summons. We can feel the delicious call of the others. The circle was gathering, soon there would be a need for Our talents. Even now the Advocate’s attendants are entering our Domain. We must prepare, for the trip will be long and arduous and the tasks which await – perilous.

“Sing a song of sixpence, a pocket full of light
Careful where you go when you’re surrounded by the night
Mr. Fox is always near, looking for a toy
He’ll strip your bones and eat your eyes
And rob you of your joy
Joy Joy Joy, he’ll rob you of your Joy”

Mr. Bumpy Toad made a place of joy, but joy runs short when the night is long and the knives are sharp. Mr. Fox found a different use for the happy place and all the children that fit through the tiny doors. Look out for the Umpugs, they’ll drag you away through the tiny doors and bake you in a pie. Mmmmm, Mr Fox just loves pie.

It’s 1976 and every city in America is celebrating the Bicentennial. New Orleans is no exception, everybody is having a good time with fireworks and cake. Well, maybe not everybody, Sarah is homeless and busy trying to take care of her little brother and the other children who live on the streets. Someone or something is taking children, street children that no one even misses except Sarah. Sarah has sent out the call, a desperate cry for help. You and your companions have heard the cry; it’s time to once again enter this dirty world and do your duty, for the Whispering Vault.
